Skiing and Snowboarding Near Atlanta: The Closest Ski Resorts, Drive Times and What to Know (2026-27)
November 6, 2026

The closest ski resorts near Atlanta are all in the North Carolina mountains and East Tennessee, because Georgia has no lift-served ski area. The nearest lift is Ski Sapphire Valley outside Cashiers, about 2½ to 3 hours from downtown. The closest full-size hill is Cataloochee in Maggie Valley at 3 to 4 hours, and Ober Gatlinburg, Hatley Pointe, Appalachian Ski Mtn, Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain run from about 3½ hours up to 6.

Here is how all seven compare for 2026-27. Every figure comes from the resort's own website as of early November 2026; where a resort hadn't posted something yet, we say so.

The closest ski resorts to Atlanta, one by one
Ski Sapphire Valley, Sapphire, NC
The closest lift to Atlanta is a small one. Sapphire has a 1,600-foot main run with a 200-foot vertical drop, a quad chair, a learning slope with a moving-carpet lift and a multi-lane tube park. Target opening is December 12, 2026; after New Year's it runs Fridays through Sundays plus the MLK and Presidents' Day Mondays, with Friday Night Lights sessions from 6 to 9 PM. The rate sheet on its site doesn't name a season, but lists adult day lift-only at $65.00 and a lift-and-rental bundle at $95.00. No terrain park. Good for a first lesson with young kids or a half day.
Cataloochee Ski Area, Maggie Valley, NC
Cataloochee is the closest full-size ski area to Atlanta: a 740-foot vertical drop, 18 slopes on 50 acres, 100% snowmaking, lights on every slope and five lifts, including the Doppelmayr quad that replaced the old Omigosh double last season. Two terrain parks: a beginner park on Turkey Trot and an intermediate-to-advanced park on Richard's Run. In peak season (December 11 through March 6) it runs 9 AM to 10 PM. It usually opens early (last year, November 12), though 2026-27 opening day hadn't been announced when we checked. Adult Marathon passes (open to close) are $76 on weekdays and $116 on weekends and holidays; night passes are $46 Monday through Thursday and $53 Friday through Sunday and holidays. Best for day trips, early-season laps and families.
Ober Gatlinburg, Gatlinburg, TN
Ober went back to its original name this year after a few seasons as Ober Mountain. It's Tennessee's only ski area: 500 feet of vertical, 12 trails (3 beginner, 7 intermediate, 2 advanced) on 38 acres, quad, double and surface lifts, and a terrain park that closes on peak holidays. Night tickets cover the last four hours of the day and are sold on site only. The resort says it put close to $1 million into snowmaking this summer and anticipates opening Friday, November 20, weather permitting, running to mid-March. Day-ticket prices weren't posted when we checked, though the resort says rates are unchanged from last season. Best for a Gatlinburg weekend where not everyone skis.
Hatley Pointe, Mars Hill, NC
Hatley Pointe is the rebuilt Wolf Ridge, north of Asheville: 21 trails on 54 acres, a 700-foot vertical drop, 100% snowmaking, night skiing on lit runs and four lifts (a quad, a rope tow and two surface lifts), plus a new 400-foot covered surface lift, the Cloudbelt. Posted winter hours start December 5 (9 AM to 4 PM), then run 9 AM to 9 PM from December 13 through March 8. Daily tickets, rentals and lessons go on sale November 10, so prices weren't up when we checked, and no terrain park is listed. Best for riders who want real vertical on a quieter hill.
Appalachian Ski Mtn, Blowing Rock, NC
App is small, with a 365-foot vertical, 13 slopes and six lifts, but it's the park hill of the Southeast. Four terrain parks (Appaljack, Appal Jam, AppalTop and The Highline), 100% snowmaking, every slope lit, and Midnight Blast sessions until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights and December 26 to 31. It's an official Burton Learn to Ride center with 6-to-1 group lessons on conveyor-served beginner terrain. The 2026-27 season is scheduled November 20 to March 14, and online reservations are required for tickets and rentals. Adult 8 Hour Flex tickets are $57 on weekdays, $85 on Saturdays and Sundays and $87 on holidays; night sessions are $40 Sunday through Thursday and $50 Friday and Saturday. Best for park riders, first-timers and night sessions.
Sugar Mountain Resort, Sugar Mountain, NC
Sugar has the biggest vertical on this list at 1,200 feet, with 20 slopes on 125 acres, eight lifts including a high-speed six-passenger chair, 100% snowmaking and night skiing on 14 of the 20 slopes, 6 to 10 PM nightly. Sugar aims to open by early-to-mid November but hadn't set a date when we checked. 2026-27 adult tickets are $65 for a full day Monday through Friday and $104 on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays (December 17 through January 1); night sessions are $47 Monday through Thursday and Sunday, $60 Friday, Saturday and holidays. Online sales only reload an existing RFID card. No terrain park is listed on its site. Best for strong intermediates who want long runs.
Beech Mountain Resort, Beech Mountain, NC
Beech tops out at 5,506 feet, which the resort calls the highest ski area in Eastern America: an 830-foot vertical, 17 trails on 95 acres, nine lifts (four quads), 100% snowmaking and a terrain park on For Pete's Sake. Projected opening is November 21, 2026, closing March 20, 2027. Night skiing runs in the regular season from December 4, to 9 PM Monday through Thursday and 10 PM Friday through Sunday. Adult 8 Hour Flex tickets are $60 on weekdays and $97 on weekends and the holiday period, night tickets $44 and $59, each plus a $2 media fee. Best for a weekend with mixed abilities and the highest base on the list.
Plan the trip from Atlanta

- Best time to go: January and February. Every hill here relies on snowmaking, so cold matters more than storms, and the base is deepest after the holidays. Thanksgiving through New Year's is the busiest, priciest stretch.
- Weekday beats weekend: Skiing near Atlanta is a weekday sport. Sugar is $65 versus $104 for an adult full day, Beech $60 versus $97, Cataloochee $76 versus $116, and the lift lines disappear.
- Check the snow report and the roads: Read the resort's own report the morning you leave. Rain and warm spells can close Sapphire, and Beech and Sugar sit above 4,000 feet, where access roads can ice up.
- Buy ahead online: Appalachian requires online reservations, Cataloochee takes them two weeks out, Beech sells online, Hatley Pointe opens daily sales November 10, and Sugar's online store only reloads an existing card.
- Rent or bring your own: Renting is fine for a first day, and Sapphire bundles a rental with the ticket. By your second or third trip, your own boots are the upgrade you'll feel most.
Gear for a Southeast ski trip
Southeast snow is firm, man-made and often wet by afternoon. Start with snowboard boots that actually fit; we fit boots and boards in the store in Cumming, and the snowboard size calculator will get you to the right length. Pick a snowboard with some edge hold, and set up your bindings at home, not in the parking lot.
For clothing, waterproofing matters more than insulation. A shell-style jacket and pants or bibs over base layers handle a 25-degree morning and a 48-degree afternoon. Gloves take a beating from wet snow and rope tows. A helmet is standard on firm snow, and goggles with a flat-light lens earn their keep at night. First time out? Read what you need to snowboard for the first time, and for picking the gentlest hill, see our guide to the best ski resorts for beginners in the Southeast. We're at 3040 Keith Bridge Rd, A1, Cumming, open Tuesday to Saturday 10 to 6 and Sunday 10 to 3, with free ground shipping on orders over $150.
