If you are heading out on Lake Lanier this summer, one big question comes up fast: should you learn to wakeboard or wakesurf? Both are incredible ways to enjoy the water, but they feel completely different and suit different riders. This side-by-side guide breaks down the differences so you can decide which sport, and which gear, is right for you.
The Quick Answer
Wakeboarding is faster, more athletic, and built around jumping and tricks, you stay strapped to the board and connected to the rope. Wakesurfing is slower, mellower, and rope-free, letting you surf the boat's wake like an endless ocean wave. If you love adrenaline and air, lean wakeboard. If you want a relaxed, low-impact ride you can do all day, lean wakesurf.
Speed and Intensity
Wakeboard boats run around 18 to 24 mph, and falls at that speed have more impact. Wakesurfing happens at just 10 to 12 mph, which makes falls gentle and the whole experience more forgiving. For families, older riders, or anyone easing back into watersports, that lower speed is a big part of wakesurfing's appeal.
Learning Curve
Most beginners find wakesurfing easier to pick up, getting up on a larger surf board at low speed feels natural, and once you find the wave's pocket you can drop the rope and cruise. Wakeboarding has a steeper initial climb because of the deepwater start and higher speed, but it is hugely rewarding once it clicks.
The Gear Difference
Wakeboards are compact, have bindings that lock both feet in, and pair with a longer rope and a stiff handle. Wakesurf boards are larger and rope-free once you are up, used with a short, thick surf rope just to get going. The boats differ too: wakesurfing needs a ballasted, inboard boat to throw a safe, surfable wave, while wakeboarding works behind a wider range of boats.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose wakeboarding if you want progression, jumps, and a workout. Choose wakesurfing if you want a laid-back, social, all-day ride that is easy on the body. The best part? Many Lanier riders do both, switching depending on the water, the crew, and the mood. You really cannot go wrong.
